switch between apps on droid

If you hold down the home button, a folder pops up containing all active applications. You can very easily switch back and forth between open apps this way.

I have been using this function to switch between my calorie counter and weight watchers diary since neither have all the functionality I need at the moment.

Hope that helps some folks

android google navigation tips

While using Google Navigation (beta) i've come across some helpful tips that may enhance your experience with it. Google Navigation (beta) is accessable from the Car Panel or via Google Maps. I'll share some of these tips below.

Home Screen Navigation/Destination Shortcuts: One of the first things i noticed was the inability to store places you frequently navigate to within the app itself. In order to have a shortcut to the destination of your choice do the following.

1. Navigate to the Home Screen you wish to put the shortcut icon.
2. Press the + symbol at the bottom right hand side of the screen next to the Phone button.
3. Press Shortcut.
4. Press Directions & Navigation.
5. Type in the address of the destination. You can also use GPS coordinates if you don't know the address.
6. Type in the name of the shortcut you are creating. IE: Home
7. Select an icon, such as the the arrow pointing to home.
8. Press Save.
9. The icon will now show up on your home screen, you can then move it around where ever you wish.

Create GPS Shortcut Folder: If you notice your screen filling up with shortcut icons you can always create a folder using the above instructions but choose "Folder" instead of Shortcut in step 3. Then name the folder GPS or whatever you like and you can store all your destination shortcuts within it.

Receiving a Phone Call: While using Google Navigation if you recieve an incoming phone call, you can take the call and google navigation will continue running in the background. It will even alert you of directions while you are talking so you don't miss your turn. Once the phone call is completed it will go right back to navigating you on your route.

Playing Music while Navigating: When you play music with the built in Music app and while using Google Navigation it will automatically cut the audio of the music out while giving you speech alerts during your route. This is done so you do not miss the directions it is giving you. Many aftermarker GPS devices do this as well when playing music from built in apps.

Enable Street View: This is a really cool feature but is not really talked about much within the Google Navigation guide. While you are on your route you can double tap the screen and if a street view is available it will show the street view of where you are heading and where you need to turn. This can be really handy when navigating in town or large cities where streets are in close proximity of one another. You can also zoom in to get street view, but you will need to keep zooming in until it shows the street view which can require many button presses.

Adding Layers to the Map: You can also add layers on top of the map which may help you located points of interest along your route. To do this while en route press the menu buttom and choose "Layers". It will then give you a choice of: Traffic View, Satellite, Parking, Gas Stations, ATMs & Banks, Restaurants. Just make your selection(s) and it will update the map to reflect the changes.

Turn off the Screen: While using Navigation you can manually shut off the screen and the voice navigation will continue giving you turn-by-turn voice alerts. This can help save your battery if you left your charger at home on accident. Also Google Navigation by default will keep the screen from falling asleep unless you follow this tip. Credit: Boomstk

Exit Navigation: Menu > Exit Navigation

Change Route: After your route is displayed, select the menu button, then select route info. on the map itself you will see a route icon. Select that and it will display multiple routes if they are available.

Home Screen Navigation/Destination Shortcuts (Alternate): While in the phones regular phonebook. If you edit an entry, then under "Others" click "Add", there's a "Postal Address" option. You can put in their address from there.

When you want to navigate to there, you can view the contact and a "View Home address" link will show up (or "View Work address, etc"). Click on it, it starts up Google Maps. Click on the Blue "Up" arrow that appears on the screen and it will navigate to that entries address. Credit: PaulRivers

Misc Tips:

1. When navigating, touch the ETA estimate in the lower left corner. This will make the display pop up to an overhead view of the route, complete with traffic overlays. This is handy if want to avoid bad, red traffic and wish to go another route. It won't give you options, but it will reroute if you deviate off course. Credit: dibs ODDJOB

General Tips:

1. Make sure to keep Google Maps up-to-date. Whenever an update is available its best to update your map as soon as possible to reflect any changes that may have occured.

sync contact birthday to calendar android

've seen quite a few people wondering how to get the birthday's from their contacts (either google, facebook or both) into their calendars. Here is how to do it.

First, Facebook limits the way you can view their data (phone numbers, birthday's, etc.). They will allow you to view it, but not to scrape the data to transfer to another app (which is why there is no way to sync your google and facebook addressbooks). I remember a while back somebody wrote a facebook app that would sync with Plaxo and facebook shut down the users account within a day of him starting to use the program. Because of this limitation, you will need to add 2 calendars to get all your birthdays and if you have a birthday in both facebook and google, that birthday will appear twice. That being said, here is what you can do.

To add Birthdays from Google contacts to your Google Calendar.

1. Using a computer go to calendar.google.com
2. Top Right corner, click on settings/calendar settings.
3. Under Calendar settings click Calendars
4. By Other Calendars, click Browse Interesting Calendars
5. Under Interesting Calendars, select More
6. Subscribe to the Contacts' Birthdays and Events calendar.
7. Return to Calendar, your Contacts' Birthdays should now be appearing.
8. On your phone open the calendar app and go to menu/more/refresh
9. Go to menu/more/calendars and make sure the new CBE calendar is checked.
10. Back to Calendar. The birthdays should now be showing.
11. If they do not appear, try menu/refresh.
12. If they still do not appear go to menu/more/calendars/remove and remove the CBE calendar then menu/more/calendars/add and readd the CBE calendar (this is what I had to do).

*Google does not currently have a way to add reminders to this calendar. You can add a reminder to any individual birthday, one at a time, from your phone, but the reminders will not sync back to the web version of Gcal and will only work on the phone.

To add Birthdays from Facebook to your Google Calendar

1. Go to fbCal.com - Facebook Calendar Generator, and click Get your calendars now
2. In facebook click Allow/Allow/Allow
3. Under "Subscribe to Friends Birthdays" click the Google Calendar icon
4. In Google Calendar, Select Yes add this Calendar
5. In Google Calendar go to Settings/Calendars, double click the calendar with the really long complicated name, and rename to fbCal or something else you will remember, Save. Facebook birthdays should now be showing in Gcal.
6. In your phone calendar, menu/more/refresh
7. Menu/more/calendars/ and put a checkmark next to the fbCal calendar.
8. Menu/more/refresh
9. Everything should be working now.

*If you go back to the fbCal page in facebook, you can follow the same process to create a calendar for Facebook events. You CAN create regular Google notifications for both facebook calendars.

swype tricks for android

Well after you have swype installed and ready to go here are a few tips to help you get the most out of it:

1. Use the built in tutorial. This tutorial takes 5 minutes to complete but will show you the ins and outs of using its keyboard, its very handy and a must if you intend on using it.

2. If a word you swype in does not come up correctly or offers you choices that are not even close, just click the X and then type it in one letter at a time, using the peck-a-key method. This adds it to the dictionary and the next time you swype it in, it'll work.

3. The built in dictionary is not as complete as you may want it, but over time it will learn how you type/swype and will work better as time goes on. After a week or so it should work with most or all the words you swype in, but give it time. They exclude some words on purpose (cuss words etc) or words that aren't very commonly used to keep the size of the file small so it doesn't take up too much space on your device with words and patterns you don't use.

4. Holding down a button will change the letter to the symbol above the letter. This comes in handy when you need to insert a couple numbers or commonly used symbols and don't want to switch screens. I find its much quicker to just hold a button than switching, hitting the key and then switching back.

5. Holding down the back key will delete full words at a time. That way you don't need to keep hitting the back key repeatedly, this is a time saver if you need to delete a full sentence for example.

6. Pushing shift will change the symbol keyboard to the symbols/characters above the numbers. This just makes it quicker to choose a symbol instead of long pressing the key to achieve the same result.

I'll update this post and add more tips as i can think of them or others post them.

how to do a hard reset on incredible

Please note that all data will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible as a result of this procedure.
This process does NOT delete data stored on the microSD card.
I recommend backing up all of your personal data before proceeding.

  1. Turn the power off. If your HTC DROID Incredible is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
  2. Hold the Volume Down button
  3. Press and release the Power button
  4. You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
  5. Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
  6. Press and release the Power button
  7. Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the HTC DROID Incredible. Once the wipe is complete, the phone will reboot to its factory fresh state.

how to camera tips for android

Tip #1 - Tap to Autofocus + Hold to take the picture - this is a basic one that I'm sure many are familiar with, but for those who aren't...
Simply tap on your subject and the camera will focus. If you tap+hold on your subject the camera will focus and take the photo. I find that it's easier to steady myself too get a clear image. Pressing the optical trackball tends to shake the camera and makes my images blurry.

Tip #2 - Don't be afraid to go without the flash - Unless the image is barely visible on the screen I try to keep flash off. Using tip number one along with steadying your self (brace against a wall, flat surface, or user your arms as a bi-pod) you can get great results.

Tip #3 - Diffuse the flash - If you find yourself needing to use the flash then this tip will help you avoid overexposed faces or subjects. I simply taped a single layer of napkin to the inside of my gel case. This covers the dual led flash and helps diffuse the light so it's not too concentrated.

Tip#4 - Turn down the in-camera sharpness - This is personal preference but I feel that images are somewhat over sharpened.
Pull out the camera tab -> Image Settings -> dial down sharpness to your liking...if you like sharpness dial it up I guess

Tip #5 - Zoom feature - I actually think it works pretty well on this phone. Simply swipe your thumb up or down on the right-hand side of the screen.

Tip #6 - Explore metering types - You have Spot, Average, & Center. Depending on your environment and subject one may be more preferable than others. Average meters the entire image trying to find a middle ground for exposing everything. Spot metering tries to meter a specific point in the image. It won't care about under or over exposing any other part of the image, just properly exposing the point you select to meter. Center simply meters the center of your image.
Camera Tab -> Settings -> Metering -> Average is default and should work for most cases.

Tip #7 - Get Creative - There are filter effects such as sepia.
Camera tab -> Effects -> explore the options and enjoy.

Those are just a few, and I'm sure others will post stuff I forgot or didn't think about. I hope this helps, happy shooting and enjoy

remove declined facebook events from android calendar

I searched the forum and was unable to find an answer for this. I got tired of seeing my hundreds of Facebook contacts birthday reminders on my work calendar so I found a way to stop it from syncing. I'm not sure if this is common knowledge or if anyone cares, but I know numerous people who HATE the Facebook reminders and so do I. If anyone would like to remove their Facebook events from syncing with their calendar this is what to do.

Open your Calendar application (stock one, not a third party calendar like smooth calendar, etc)
Hit menu>More>Calendars
This will show everything being synced to your calendar
Scroll down to Facebook and uncheck it
You will now have no annoying Birthday reminders syncing on your calendar

Like I said, I'm not sure if people already know this, but everyone I've talked to who has a Droid/BB hate this feature so I figured I would share what I found.

Changing the preferred method for contacting people
So up under each favorite's picture (or icon) is a small box that has their name in it. If you have already established a default contact type (small phone, envelope, message or contact card should appear in the bottom right hand corner of the icon) and want to change it, click on that small name button and it brings up the list of all possible contact methods. You can pick another contact mehod just for that one instance, but the contact type you set up originally will remain. Once in that same list screen you can click Menu>More>Set Widget Action and choose the new contact type. It even has an option to view the contact which is what I like so that I can pick from the list every time without accidentally calling them if I don't hit the little button just right.

This is a nice touch... I've got 4 email accounts set up using IMAP. When I bring up the mail app, the Incredible automatically checks for new mail. If I switch to a different account, it then checks that account. I've got all the accounts set to check at either 30 or 60 minute intervals, but it's nice that it checks it just by bringing up the mail app. It's not push mail, but coming from the WinMo world where I had to manually hit "Send/Receive" if I wanted to see if anything came in since the last auto-check, it's refreshing.
